Managing a Remote Team
Remote working has gained popularity over the last several years, but while it was once a choice, many of those who have recently found themselves working in their home offices are there out of necessity.
While employees adjust to this new way of life, managers may struggle with motivating and overseeing a remote team. Here are some tips to help you succeed at remote management and increase productivity regardless of your location.
1. Set the standard. Make a habit of video conferencing each day, whether on a one-to-one basis or in small groups. This adds structure to the work day and provides the opportunity to set the agenda, gather feedback, and determine what resources team members need to succeed.
2. Keep in touch. Social distancing restrictions can lead to feelings of loneliness and isolation. Check in with team members each day to ensure they are coping well with the changes before them.
3. Set clear expectations. It’s important to manage expectations for your team and yourself, with clearly defined objectives and deadlines. This will help to keep your projects on track while helping employees understand each task and the reason behind it.
4. Utilize technology. With so many available tools for communication and collaboration, it’s easier than ever to keep in close contact with your team.
5. Measure your success. Rethink the way you measure success, with an emphasis on outcomes rather than the method, hours, or activity required to achieve the end result.
6. Outfit your team. While some remote workers have all the tools, technology, and equipment they need to work outside the office, others may lack the right resources. As a manager, it is your responsibility to ensure each member of your team has what they need to complete the tasks before them and that any items they lack are made available in a timely manner.
7. Remain flexible. It’s unreasonable to expect remote workers to adhere to the same schedule at home as they would in an office setting. Trust your team to deliver the results you need while adjusting to their new environment and give them the freedom to embrace productivity on their own terms.
Try using these tips to elevate the productivity, morale, and well being of your team.
